Surely one of the greatest pleasures of planning a wedding...sampling wedding cake. Just like everything else we do at Gateaux, we do it differently than the other bakeries.
We never freeze our cakes, actually, we don't even have a freezer in the shop! For that reason, we don't have a freezer full of cake samples to pull out for each appointment. It would be a whole lot easier than what we do, but (if you haven't noticed already) we don't do anything the easy way. Nothing dries out an otherwise delicious cake more than freezing it. So, when we started Gateaux, we vowed never to commit such an act of cake abuse! Our wedding cakes are baked fresh the week of the wedding, so our samples are baked fresh as well.
How it works
At the design session, we discuss the cake flavors
and make a list of all the cakes you'd like to sample. Then, once a month, we bake every flavor we make (and a few custom flavors for clients looking for something a little different). We slice the cakes up, and box the slices according to which flavors you selected at your design session. You simply swing by the shop on your way home from work that night (or send your fiance, mom, dad, wedding coordinator, whomever you trust with a box of cake) and pick up the samples. Take them home with you, invite over the parents, or a couple of friends, and eat cake until you can eat no more! We recommend pacing yourself; it can take a while to narrow it down to your favorites. We don't charge anything for this first round of samples. Subsequent samples, however, run $20.00 for each flavor you'd like to try. So be sure to schedule your sample date when all of your key cake tasters are around to help you narrow down the field of flavors. It's a tough job, but you'll manage!
